Tips & Tricks

  • The sweet smell of ironing - For those of you who love ironing, here is a sweet smelling idea, which also makes ironing even more pleasurable! Take 2 cups of DISTILLED water, 2 ounces of vodka and 15 to 20 drops of 100% essential oil of lavender, mix them together and use in the iron to fill the air with a wonderful fragrance while ironing. Be sure to store in the refrigerator. - Barbara T.
  • Save $ when paper piecing - If you are doing foundation piecing, and must purchase the paper...here is a money saving tip! Just make your necessary copies onto standard copy paper. When you are ready to remove the paper and are having difficulty getting all the "bits" off, just gently spray the paper with water and it will pull away with ease!- Dilys.
  • Quick way to pick up 'misplaced' pins - Tired of stepping on pins that get lost on the floor? Use a magnetic sweeper (this is a tool intended to pick up nails at building sites). Run the magnet over the carpet or floor and it will pick up all the 'misplaced' pins and needles.
  • Warped cutting mat - If your cutting mat is warped (possibly by leaving it in a hot car), you can put it on a baking sheet in the oven at 200 degrees until it flattens out. Make sure it is flat while it cools.
  • Fabric Cutting - Have you found yourself in an awkward position when trying to cut your fabric? You know, 'If only I were left-handed...' situations come up from time to time. Now, I discovered how to cut with 2 rulers, and I will never wish I was turned around again. To cut comfortably, measure your fabric, for right-handed cutters, for example, on the right, top and bottom sides. Then, for the left side, measure where you want to cut, then place a second ruler butted against the first ruler cutting line. Then, simply lift the first ruler, and cut the line using the second ruler instead! It becomes a habit in no time, and you get to use more tools this way, too! My favorite second ruler is usually a 6" x 12" rectangle, because it's easiest to move around on your work surface. I hope you can use this tip on your next cutting project! - Carrie
